The various aspects of expectations ofjob seekers, selection criteria via competence, focused development andthe link with total quality management through continuous dialogue areall included. The material is concerned with the process as it affectsmanagerial staff who, throughout Western Europe are becoming morefamiliar with the competence approach. The debate on managerialcompetence is, in many aspects, still in its infancy and this articleraises some issues, provision for which has not yet been madeadequately.
