Abstract
Recent work carried out by the Centre for Workand Labour Market Studies into the labour marketcharacteristics of the longterm unemployed in theSouth Coast Region of New South Wales bearsa close similarity in scope and methodology to thework by Barry Thomas and the Study group atDurham University reported in this journal in 1990Thomas, B., Longterm Unemployment ALocal Labour Market Study, InternationalJournal of Manpower, Vol. 11 No. 1, 1990, pp.1320. However, sufficient differences emergebetween the two studies to indicate that a set ofgeneralised propositions on the makeup andmotivations of the longterm unemployed may stillbe some way off and is likely to contain significantcountryspecific components.
