Letter from the Editor On October 30, I had the pleasure of exchanging emails with George Whitesides, CEO of Virgin Galactic. We agreed to talk over the next couple of days or during the weekend about his speaking at the annual Innova-Con conference. Less than 24 hours later, VSS Enterprise, a Virgin Galactic Scaled Composites Model 339 SpaceShipTwo experimental spaceflight test vehicle, suffered a catastrophic in-flight breakup and crashed in the 1,2 Mojave Desert, California, United States while performing a test flight. The co-pilot was killed and the pilot was seriously injured. I thought long and hard about the incident, and even drafted a consolatory email from the IAOIP, but have yet to send it. What do you say to someone who is literally on the “bleeding edge” of innovation? Almost daily, I hear from individuals and companies that innovation is “hard” and “dangerous.” What if the product is a failure and we lose customers? Well, I think the Virgin Galactic story puts a lot of that worry in perspective. We will offer the first certification for innovation professionals at the Innova-Con conference in February.
