CHANGING engine oil is regarded by many motor car drivers and commercial vehicle owners as a necessary nuisance and although they know that it is an important part of their maintenance programme, all do not realise exactly why or what advantages are to be obtained by ensuring this regular and frequent attention. In fact, many believe that the period suggested by the motor car manufacturers, usually about 2,000 mile intervals, is due to a tieup between them and the oil company whose oil is recommended, in order to merely increase his sales.
