Abstract
Disquiet has been expressed in a number of countries regarding thecost of health care provision. The UK and New Zealand have extensivelyreviewed funding mechanisms including the application of aninternal market as advocated by Enthoven. Currently thereis active disillusionment in some administrative circles in the USA dueto burgeoning increases in health spending, to the extent that auniversal health service has even been considered. The applicability ofan internal market is questioned and various consequencesthat may result if this concept is implemented rigorously are reviewed.
