The role of performance appraisal and rewardsystems in enhancing employee performance isdiscussed. A model is presented which arguesthat feedback is a powerful instrument inperformance enhancement. Performance appraisalshould provide a clear and realistic indication ofthe work that must be accomplished, performanceexpectations, and feedback on performanceagainst expectations. The key dimensions thatmust be taken into account when designing sucha system are outlined.
