14 PIGMENT AND RESIN TECHNOLOGY July 1991 Hi-tech system for colour control and management expertise Polyester compound producer DSM RESINS UK — part of the Dutch multinational DSM Group since 1988 — has recently acquired a n ACS-Datacolor colour manage ment system with Chroma Calc software and CS-5 spectrophotometer from Yorkshire Colour Systems (YCS) of Bradford, ACS-Datacolor' s UK and Eire agency. The ACS-Datacolor system is exceptionally fast, wit h many functions , including colour formulation and batch correction. The comprehensive Chroma Calc software performs all basic colour control tasks with added enhancements to increase productivity; its program mathematics are considered to be th e fastest available. Colour matching and match prediction is exceptionally accurate, wit h the ability to match with one or two pigments and to measure samples down to 1.0 nanometer intervals. Options offered include means to improve productivity, wit h a more objective alternative to trial-and-error color formulation and visual evaluation. Also included: a wast e management function, wit h the facility to reduce idle time on production equipment; improved inventory control without sacrificing quality Now installed in th e UK company's DeesideTechnical (ie, th e speed and quality of colour matching is idela for Centre, th e system is in constant use — in development users to meet Just-In-Time inventory needs). work, as well as 'trouble-shooting'. This goes for colours, too. The Technical Centre develops between 8 to 10 colours each week, so setting up a comprehensiv e shade library to maintain customers' and the company's ow n colour formulations is a major task. Matching to standard and match predicting is equally important. According to Sheila Singha, this is wher e the CS-5 spectro comes into its ow n .. . 'it is very reliable'. She continues: Th e system is very simple to operate. It is used constantly for match predicting gelcoat systems. And , because our production changes within different gelcoat systems, w e have t o rely on our starting guide, whic h is handled accurately and quickly by this hi-tech instrumentation.' The ACS-Datacolor system is also involved in solving R&D problems, developin g ne w products, assessing and noting changes, an d is no w a very important element in DSM Resins UK's Technical Centre.
