As long as improvements in short and longdistance rail service appear technically, economically and environmentally unfeasible, air travel will remain the only viable means for rapid passenger transport even if airports are hard put to cope with the future flood of passengers. This raises the problem of safety, especially with regard to regional air traffic and during takeoffs and landings under difficult weather conditions. With the development of its LATAN system, MBB has gone a long way towards solving this problem.
