Food Poverty The End of the Line The adequacy and appropriateness of official responses to foodpoverty in 1980s Britain are questioned. A qualitative study wascarried out in NW England, 198788, exploring the mechanisms behindsocial inequalities in eating behaviour, as the basis for thedevelopment of effective social policy. Structural and materialconstraints and pressures external to and beyond the control oflowincome households were found to be largely responsible for theireating behaviour.
