The word flexible, when viewed in an industrialcontext, although accepted by users and suppliers equally, does not bearuniformity of meaning, as different types of flexibility requiredifferent manufacturing responses. Change can be capacityrelated, induced by customers or equipmentrelated, and a manufacturing strategymay involve price, andor speed and reliability of delivery. However, although types of flexibility may interrelate and conflict with oneanother, organisations must ensure that their investments produce thebenefits appropriate to their markets.
