Relying on a sample survey, seeks to establish what progress hasbeen made in changing employment policies, practices and procedures inthe engineering industry in Northern Ireland since the possibility ofnew fair employment legislation was mooted in the late 1980s. Findsthat, while most employers have made real progress, others show littlesubstantial change in their approach. However, while in general the newlaw is being taken very seriously, for reasons which may often liebeyond the control of employers, it could be some time before it makes asignificant impact on the employment differential between Protestantsand Roman Catholics in the industry.
