Experience and the Decision to Participate in the Labour Market Results from a Conditional Logit Model

Experience and the Decision to Participate in the Labour Market Results from a Conditional Logit... Presents results from crosssection and conditional logit modelsestimating the probability of participation by married women. Oneversion of each specification uses potential experience and the other ameasure of the number of years worked in the market since the age of 18.A series of crosssection logit models, representing a thresholdanalysis of the decision to work in the market, appears to beinappropriate, when unmeasured characteristics influence the probabilityof participation. Hence, reports results from a conditional logit modelcontrolling for fixed effects. These results confirm the crosssectionfindings regarding the limitation of potential experience. Abstract

The resultssuggest that potential experience reflects the negative effects ofageing on the probability of participation rather than the positiveimpact of training or tastes for market work.
