DYNAMICS OF MIDDLE MANAGERIAL ROLES A STUDY IN FOUR INDIAN ORGANISATIONS Middle level managers, a typical feature of large hierarchicalorganisations, are a critical resource for ensuring performance andgrowth. Few studies, however, have specifically examined the nature ofmiddle managerial roles, their causes and consequences fororganisational performance and change. This research is based onindepth case studies of four Indian manufacturing companies. The studyexamines the nature of middle managerial roles in these organisationsand their impact on current performance and change. It also discussesfactors which have led to the evolution of these middle managerialroles. Abstract
