The Financial Times
The continued poor performance of many retailers tradinginternationally suggests that effectively managing internationaloperations continues to be a source of great difficulty. This paperpresents short case studies of the ways in which two leading UKretailers Dixons and Laura Ashley have, by verydifferent mechanisms, expanded their businesses outside the UK. For bothcompanies, a review of their motivations for and philosophies on tradinginternationally is followed by some observations on the management oftheir international operations. Both companies have recentlyrestructured their management in an effort to move away from amultidomestic management style and towards a moreintegrated transitional approach.
