Discusses US Army War College approach to including StrategicLeadership in its curriculum. Key aspects emerged from a preliminary,widely based conference the environment in which a leader mustfunction their tasks the competences they require. These are analysed.Competences are subdivided into personal characteristics robustness,tolerance of uncertainty, willingness to reopen decisions, viewingmistakes as new information, frames of reference to be wide, andspecific capabilities complex cognitive skills, persuasiveness, lateralnetworking. Compares effectiveness of academic with onthejoblearning, looks at learning methodologies and curriculum design issues,and the importance of practitioner mentoring.
