Firms around the world are facing an everincreasing array ofemployeerelated problems, such as decreasing productivity, falteringquality of products, persistent absenteeism, worker dissatisfaction, andhigh levels of turnover. Exacerbating this situation, there is aworldwide recession and explosive geopolitical developments, which haveled to great uncertainties in world markets. For many organizations, theneed to respond effectively to these problems is of paramountimportance, as their economic viability hangs in the balance. To dealwith the challenges of todays global environment and to staycompetitive in the world marketplace, organizations need to look beyondthe sphere of traditional directive management and the limitedapplication of participative management. One concept, which is showingparticular promise in this regard as a comprehensive solution, is thatof selfmanaging teams SMTs. Explores the essence of this concept, theunique role which it assigns to management, some of its drawbacks andbenefits. Also suggests some critical requirements for successfulimplementation.
