The issue of competitiveness in US manufacturing industry isaddressed. The reasons for the decline and lack of competitiveness of USmanufacturing companies after the Second World War are summarised andthe present situation the application of new technologies andthe globalisation of markets and competition is described. Thesechanges are placed in an operational context and it is concluded thatthe adoption of computer integrated manufacturing concepts andtechnology is essential as a driving force of corporate strategy toenable manufacturing industry to remain competitive or to regaincompetitiveness.
