Womens progress up the corporate ladder is still limited by aglass ceiling despite the myriad of Government policiesand programmes which have been introduced to ensure that their talentsand skills are recognised. Reviews the reasons for this existence of theglass ceiling and the role managerial women may haveplayed consciously or unconsciously in sustaining it by havinginappropriate qualifications and experience for the top positions. Womencan help themselves to overcome this career hurdle by acquiringappropriate business skills and know how taking up linemanagementpositions rather than management service roles gaining the necessaryexperience through apprenticeship and actingpositions seeking career counselling volunteering forleadership and executive positions and acquiring the ability to measuretheir operating effectiveness in the workplace. Women also need to beaware of the emergence of new barriers to their progress. The currentsocioeconomic situation is creating different glassceilings in the form of the downsizing of organizations, newdifferentiated and selfdirected career paths, the advent of thecontractual worker, and the care of aged parents.
