The name of John Harvard is widely known through the university which bears his name, yet relatively little is known of the man himself. One of the Puritan Fathers of New England, he was not the founder of Harvard University, the principle of which had been decided in the summer of 1636 while Harvard himself was still in England; but at his death in 1638 he bequeathed half of his estate and all his books to the college. The nature of his private library is described and discussed.
