Abstract
Librarians and others interested in youth have frequently expressed the opinion that the average boy and girl leave school without much knowledge of books other than of those used in classrooms. The view of the critics is that educationists have failed to appreciate the importance of giving youngsters such instruction as would make them realise the fascination and importance of books, and to implant in them a desire to continue reading when school years were finished, and so enable the youngsters better to attain what Mr. Stanley Jast has called selfdevelopment in an atmosphere of freedom. The contributors to the present symposium represent educationists and laymen.
