It is noted that new British and Europeanlegislation will make it a criminal offence forcompanies not to dispose of their waste productsproperly. Organisations, following the Americanexample, will have to monitor the costs of wastedisposal just as closely as they audit those of theirproducts. Insurance companies are likely to bemore specific in their underwriting of pollutiondisasters in the light of the swingeing paymentsdoled out in the past. They will now demand thehighest level of physical risk management,prevention rather than cure, involving totalmanagement commitment, the existence of whichcould have obviated the demise of companies inthe past. Penalties for corporate pollution of theenvironment will be most severe and negligentdirectors will be singled out for punishment.
