Disease Staging is a clinically based classification systemwhich focuses on the dimensions of severity of illness and can beimplemented using the same data required for the DRGs. Reports a pilotstudy in the EmiliaRomagna region of Italy, where data were analysedfrom three hospitals for patients hospitalized in 1988 with fourdiseases coronary artery diseaseacute myocardial infarction,cholecystitis, appendicitis, and diabetes mellitus.
