Alcoholism in Britain has reached epidemic proportions. It has been estimated by Dr Melhuish, in his book Work and Health, that there are over a quarter of a million alcoholics in Britain. Deaths from alcoholism trebled between the middle of the 1960s and the end of the 1970s, and admissions to mental hospitals for treatment have doubled for men and trebled for women in recent years.
