THE FockcWulf Fw 187 has apparently been produced to supplement the Messerschmitt Me 110an aeroplane the relative success of which is still a matter of debate. There is no doubt that the Germans anticipated the need for longrange escort aeroplanes probably because of the inadequate armament on their bombers long before such a type had been produced in this country. Their ideas have, however, undergone some modification as the result of actual war experience. It will he recalled that the Me 110 is a twoseater lighter there is actually room for a crew of three for certain duties and that it has rearward protection in the form of two manually operated machineguns, which have a limited are of lire under a tipup hood. The second member of the crew in the Fw 187 combines the duties of navigator, wirelessoperator and gun loader only. It will further be noticed that the crew has been closely grouped following the latest German practice, which is based on the belief that proximity stiffens moral.
