A NEW RANGE OF MOTOR OILS

A NEW RANGE OF MOTOR OILS A NEW RANGE OF MOTOR OILS SHEL L X-100 A new range of Shell Motor Oils, known as X-100, was introduced last month. This range replaced the current grades and the changeover at garages in the British Isles was the biggest physical operation carried out by Shell since the end of the war. Shell X-100 oils are Premium grades, although, in this country, the names Premium and Detergent are not used by the general public, as they are in America. Advantages claimed for these oils are reduction of deposits and lacquer formation, prevention of corrosive attack on bearings and engine parts under extremes of high or low temperatures, reduction of cylinder wear, cleaner pistons and piston rings under severest operating conditions, increased valve life, which totalled together provide increased engine life and more efficient operation. The new grades were introduced to members of the Press at Thornton, where most of the research and experimental development was carried out. Engine parts were displayed and it was possible to compare dismantled engines that had run on X-100 with those tha t had run on other grades. Some of the work tha t is done at Thornton was shown to the Press. We say some, because although all departments were open for inspection, it would take weeks to really see and understand the fundamental principles of all the test engines, cold rooms, testing equipment of all sorts that make Thornton the largest Research Laboratories of their kind in the world. We propose to devote an article in a later issue to some of the special development and testing equipment that is employed at Thornton. I n addition to development and engine testing of the new X-100 oil at Thornton, these oils have been very thoroughly road tested under a wide variety of running conditions, on track and road, and in a variety of vehicle types. All leading British motor manufacturers have approved these oils. Five manufacturers of sports cars and a number of our leading drivers have decided to use them exclusively during this year's motor racing season. Abstract

A NEW RANGE OF MOTOR OILS SHEL L X-100 A new range of Shell Motor Oils, known as X-100, was introduced last month. This range replaced the current grades and the changeover at garages in the British Isles was the biggest physical operation carried out by Shell since the end of the war.
