Outlines three metaphors which can be used to help understand thestrategy process. These are the jigsaw puzzle, theice skater and the jazz band. The suggestion isthat the first two suffer from a number of limitations which the thirdattempts to address. The jazz band metaphor helps toidentify some of the features which might be expected to contribute toeffective strategic management. Draws out some pointers for managers aredrawn out from the discussion.
