134 AIRCRAF T ENGINEERING May, 1936 Th e Three-Engined Braced High-Wing Monoplane Built by the Latécoère Company H E Latécoère 582 long-range naval reconnaissance flying boat was recently constructed at Toulouse b y the Société Industrielle d'Aviation Latécoère and tested on the Lac de Bicarosse, this firm's seaplane base. The new flying boat is a three-engined, braced high-wing monoplane with a central hull and two wing floats. It was built to meet the French Government's specification for long- range naval reconnaissance flying boats. The requirements include : (1) Defensive armament capable of meeting two simultaneous attacks from different directions. (2) Good longitudinal and lateral stability. (3) Ability to maintain direction of flight and ease of control, and (4) Good visibility for both bombing and night reconnaissance operations. Among the marine qualities called for are that the boats shall be suited for: (1) operating independently for long distances over sea ; (2) landing, in case of necessity, on rough water, and manoeuvring with one engine only on smooth water, (3) remaining a t anchor for long periods without suffering from serious deterioration, and, (4), (24,916 lb.), the maximum possible stability, piloted without undue fatigue, even in bad refuelling while a t anchor b y the best available as much of the weight as possible has been weather. The centre section is carried on a faired superstructure above the deck of the hull. The principal members of the tail surfaces are of metal construction, with tubular and lattice-type spars and wooden ribs, covered with fabric. The ailerons and movable surfaces of the tail are aerodynamically balanced. The hull is built entirely in duralumin on th e longitudinal type of construction with continuous I section keels. The transverse frames have webs in sheet duralumin, reinforced b y triangulated members in the principal frames. The stiffeners are in U section. The hull is divided into nine water-tight compart ments. The Late. 582 is fitted with three "Mistral Major " 14 Krs Gnome-Rhône engines of 740 h.p . each mounted in front of the leading edge of the wing. Oil is carried in tanks in th e centre section.
