•The potential of the irrigation scheduling approach proposed by Padilla-Díaz et al. (2016) (Agric. Water Manage. 164:28–37) was assessed.•The approach is based on leaf turgor related measurements and it is suitable for hedgerow olive orchards.•As compared to the crop coefficient approach, no differences were found on midday stem water potential, stomatal conductance and CO2 assimilation.•No differences were found either on growth and production, both of fruit and oil.•The potential of the irrigation scheduling approach is confirmed. Solutions for addressing the weakest aspects are proposed.
