•Microalgal feedstock can provide maximum valuable constituents for biofuels.•Transesterification when done first reduced the inhibitors of ethanol production.•Concomitant production showed 92% methyl esters and 93% ethanol yield.•Glycerol dicarbonate was also produced via direct transesterification using DMC.•Use of Scenedesmus sp. is feasible for biofuel production.
