•The mass of shell and kernel oil cake are ∼80% of the C. inophyllum fruit biomass.•Sequential acid/alkali pretreatment of shell gave the highest reducing sugar yield.•The kernel oil cake required only solvent extraction prior to enzymatic hydrolysis.
