•We propose a novel hybrid heating system for household biogas digesters in cold winter.•We build up an integrated experimental bench to test the performance of the system.•The system has an excellent ability in increasing the fermentation temperature and the biogas production.•Economic and sensitivity analysis verifies the economic benefits of the hybrid heating system.
