Urinary bisphenol a concentrations and ovarian response among women undergoing IVF OBJECTIVE: Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic chemical used in many common consumer products. In experimental animals, BPA causes oocyte aneuploidy and reduced estradiol. We investigated the association between urinary BPA concentrations and ovarian response among women undergoing IVF. DESIGN: Prospective cohort study at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Fertility Center. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The geometric mean of two specific-gravity (SG) adjusted urinary BPA concentrations collected during each IVF cycle was used as the cycle-specific BPA exposure level. BPA concentrations were measured using HPLC. Peak serum estradiol was measured using the Elecsys Estradiol II immunoassay kit. MGH embryologists determined the number of oocytes retrieved per cycle. Multivariable mixed effect models and Poisson regression models adjusting for correlation between multiple IVF cycles in the same woman were used to evaluate the association between BPA concentrations and ovarian response, adjusting for age and Day 3 FSH levels. RESULTS: Urinary BPA concentrations were measured in 84 women (mean age 35.6 yrs) undergoing 112 IVF cycles; 30 women [36%] had more than 1 IVF cycle. SG-BPA concentrations ranged from <LOD to 65.28 μg/L (mean 3.97 ± SD 5.9); 4% of cycles had concentrations <LOD.
