•A two-stage method using gaseous ammonia and hot water was studied.•After two-stage processing, the remaining solid was rich in glucan (∼80%).•Two-stage process recovered 84.2% xylan in liquid phase.•Significantly improved glucan digestibility of the treated solid was observed (95.3%).
