•VLE, SLE, mixing enthalpy, density, and viscosity were measured for aqueous solutions of four structurally related ILs.•Condense phase transitions of the neat [BMPYR][TFES] and [BMIM][TFES] were examined by DSC.•Global descriptions of the solution energetics with reasonable prediction performance were established.•Complete miscibility with water for TFES ILs is entropy driven, while for DCA ILs entropy and enthalpy act in synergy.•In the dilute IL region, [TFES]– and [DCA]– were revealed to act as a water structure maker and breaker, respectively.
