•Thermodynamic analysis of a parabolic trough receiver with nanofluids is presented.•Syltherm800–Al2O3 nanofluid is used as the heat transfer fluid in the receiver.•Influence of nanoparticle volume fraction on receiver performance is investigated.•There is an optimal Reynolds number at each temperature and volume fraction.•Receiver thermal and thermodynamic performance improves below some Reynolds number.
