•We found horizontal and vertical variability of soil hydraulic parameters.•Field hydraulic parameter sets were achieved fast and simple with significant different from lab sets.•We found close correspondence of α and the field-derived Ks using Wooding’s and inverse solutions.•The laboratory Ks yielded higher values than field-derived Ks with a significant correlation between them (r=0.75).•Almost no difference in model performance was found using two parameter sets.
