•Hydrophilic amino acids were introduced as new promoters for hydrate growth in the systems containing hydrophobic gas.•Potential of glycine and L-serine as new synergists for KHIs was investigated.•The dual effects of amino acids on hydrate formation were detected and analyzed.•The relation between induction time and hydrophobicity values of amino acids was determined.•A probable mechanism was suggested for the promotion effect of hydrophilic amino acids on the hydrate growth.
