Suspensory ligament (SL) degeneration leads to fetlock hyperextension and is common in several breeds of horses ( Halper et al., 2006 ). Horses with pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) also frequently present with fetlock hyperextension. A similar association between Achilles tendon rupture and Cushing's disease in humans has been documented ( Mousa et al., 1999 ). In humans, corticosteroid treatment is regarded as a risk factor for Achilles tendinopathy due to a reduction in tensile strength ( Haraldsson et al., 2006 ).</P>Although cortisol concentrations are not consistently elevated in horses with PPID ( Tadros and Frank, 2013 ), degeneration of the SL may also be associated with long term exposure to intermittently high cortisol levels. Some horses with advanced PPID develop transient diabetes mellitus when stress and systemic disease are encountered ( Tadros and Frank, 2013 ). Diabetes mellitus is also a risk factor for human tendinopathy ( de Oliveira et al., 2013 ). Insulin resistance (IR) has been documented in Peruvian Paso horses with degenerative SL desmitis (DSLD); thus, IR is a possible cause of DSLD ( Xie et al., 2011 ).
