•A three-year study of GRBaV spread was conducted in a vineyard in California, USA.•Diseased vines were significantly aggregated next to a wooded riparian area.•Disease incidence increased annually at a higher magnitude in areas of aggregation.•Spatiotemporal analyses suggested spread from inoculum sources within the vineyard.•Attributes of GRBaV spread suggested a new type of vector for a grapevine virus.
