Spatial Pattern Analysis in Plant Ecology

This well structured book strikes a nice balance between sound theoretical background and a down-to-earth practical approach. After an overview of basic concepts, there is an extensive chapter on sampling techniques for spatial analysis. This is followed by consideration of one dimension and one species progressing to spatial pattern of two species including the simple concept of species association by contingency table. This is developed in the next chapter on multispecies pattern which includes ordination, euclidean distance, spectral analysis and a more detailed consideration of species association. Then a one-dimensional approach progresses to a two-dimensional one. A simple consideration of nearest neighbour analysis progresses rapidly to a sophisticated treatment of point patterns. This is followed by patterns on an environmental gradient. The final chapter looks into the future and recognises that there remains more to be done on the development and evaluation of the methods to be used for spatial pattern analysis. This book could not be described as a ‘beginner's guide’ yet it is written very lucidly in a readable style which makes the specialised content accessible to those who already have at least a modest grounding in statistics. Each chapter covers a range of methods and http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png Biological Conservation Elsevier
