•Robust optimization of a tandem grating solar thermal absorber considering unavoidable fabrication uncertainties in the design variables has been proposed. •Detailed parametric study was also performed to investigate the effect of each design variable on the performance of the solar absorber. •Using the surrogate model and the genetic algorithm, we successfully designed the robust optimum that exhibits the solar absorptance greater than 0.92 with 90% probability.
