•A new type of low-stress cropping system based on hydraulic compensation is proposed. •The calculation formulas of the critical loading force for bars at crack initiation and propagation stages are established by means of XFEM and FRANC3D, respectively. •The concept of mutation coefficient Fp0.2/Fci for critical loading force is put forward. •The research results show that when the bottom corner radius of bar notch is equal to 0.12 mm, there is no force mutation.
