•Three methods were applied to recover failed solid-state anaerobic digesters.•30–40% methane was recovered from failed digesters.•Well-mixing showed the highest CH4 yield, followed by injection and top-addition.•Recovered digesters outperformed those with a constant feedstock to inoculum ratio.
