•A techno-economic analysis of anti-fouling coatings to mitigate heat exchanger fouling is presented.•The scope of analysis covers an individual heat exchanger subject to asymptotic fouling with or without an induction period.•An approximate, explicit solution of the cleaning scheduling problem is presented.•The ‘value pricing’ concept is demonstrated for a case study where a PFPE coating was used to mitigate water scaling.•A sensitivity analysis identified when coating was attractive and where cleaning could be avoided.
