•WWTP mass balance show that DWAS accumulate more than 97% of P and Fe.•P dissolution from DWAS was achieved anaerobically, at pH 2.5, and sequential extraction.•The DWAS fractionation shown that organically bound phosphorus was hardly dissoluted.•The DWAS after acid treatment generated half the methane compared to the initial DWAS.•Addition of HIR bacteria at DWAS resulted in less H2SO4 for regulation of pH at 2.5.
