•Broadleaves showed bimodal normal masting, conifers switching normal masting.•Elaboration of mast year definition was challenging.•Mast synchrony was high in beech and spruce, low in oak and absent in pine.•Between-species mast synchrony was high with the exception of pine.•Mast frequency in beech increased in the last 25years in parts of Central Europe.
