•DMC is an excellent candidate for partially premixed low temperature combustion.•EGR and injection timing modifications were used to control charge dilution and combustion phasing.•Simultaneous reduction of NOx and smoke was achieved using low EGR and late injection.•The decrease rate is 64.7% for smoke and 42% for NOx with a small drop in performance by 11.8%.•There is an associated increase in THC and CO emissions.
