•An efficient MRT discrete Boltzmann method is proposed for compressible flows. •Both chemical reaction and external force are taken into account. •Both hydrodynamic and thermodynamic nonequilibrium effects are considered. •This method is suitable for subsonic, supersonic, and hypersonic fluid flows. •This method provides more detailed information than Navier–Stokes models.
