•Hg oxidation and the SCR reaction occur on different sites on Cu-SSZ-13.•SO2 decreases Hg oxidation on all catalysts tested.•SO2 causes complete deactivation of Cu-SSZ-13 due to sulfate formation.•Cu-SSZ-13 retains Hg oxidation capacity in presence of NH3 + NO while CSC does not.
