•Recent studies aimed at achieving social acceptance for geothermal projects accommodating the natural and social environment are integrated.•Geochemical analysis of hot spring fluids is an effective means to investigate possible interference of geothermal exploitation to hot springs.•An extended concept of Overall System Design (OSD), aimed at maximizing social acceptance as well as business profitability, is introduced.•Stakeholder attitudes and needs are diverse so that developers approach for social acceptance should differ due to the situation of the prospect.•In order to achieve social acceptance, explanation to stakeholders based on geoscientific facts and the concept of OSD may be effective.
